D-Day

Note: we're busy updating this whole section at the moment, please bear with us.

D-Day refers to the allied landings on June 6th 1944 where 146,000 US, British and Canadian troops successfully invaded Normandy to obtain a bridgehead for further expansion into Europe.

Six divisions were to land on the first day; three U.S., two British and one Canadian. Two more British and one U.S. division were to follow up after the assault division had cleared the way through the beach defences.

Normandy is a magnet for D-Day pilgrims particularly from the UK and a lot of history can be soaked up in quite a short area. Visit the D-Day beaches of: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. St. Mere Eglise which has the famous swinging parachutist hanging from the spire also has an excellent D-Day musuem and other historic sites such as Pont du Hoc.

The cemeteries though sobering, are also worth a visit, the German one has a good musuem as well. I have been to Normandy myself twice just to visit the D-Day sites and if you like history, I'd recommend it.
