Holidays in Normandy

Normandy has lots to offer if you're thinking of planning a holiday:

Swimming

There are 600km of coastline from Le Treport through to Mont St.Michel so bathing fun is guaranteed. Many beaches have life guards in the summer and be careful of the currents near river estuaries. Take especial attention to the tides, the beaches usually show this information or get a tide table in the local tourist office. The tidal water drop can be high and the tide moves quickly, so don't do things like park your car on the beach with the tide out. Many of the beaches are also not built up.

In the summer the sea reaches temperatures of 18-20 degrees centigrade but you can pretty much count on a rainshower

Cycling and mountainbiking

You can find an empty country road very quickly and cyclists more frequently have the right of way on the roads for example on the coastal road Fecamp-Etretat. Increasingly appearing are mountainbike routes such as by Clecy on the right bank of the river Orne.

Golf

Normandy has quite a range of golf courses some with a sea view suchs as the 18 hole course at Clecy, www.golf-de-clecy.com or like Port-en-Bessin www.omahabeachgolfclub.com.

Horse riding

Normandy is France's most important horse breeding region and as such there is much on offer for the horse rider, riding schools, lodging for horse and rider, horse riding route. In Orne alone there are 2000 km of riding ways.

Sailing, surfing, beach-sailing

Sailing is a big thing in Normandy and there are 40 yacht marinas with berths for 1300 vessels. The bigger the resort there more likely there is to be a Club Nautique offering the entire spectrum of water sports. The chances of excellent water sports offerings are highest on the Cote Fleurie and the Cote de Nacre. Resorts that are true specialist in water sports have the label 'Station Voile'.
