Caen

Caen with its almost 20000 inhabitants is the second largest city in Normandy and is the administrative centre of Calvados and is the centre of the business and cultural life in Basse-Normandie. The city was largely destroyed during the WW2 but rebuilt in character and style retaining the old inner city.

The university founded in 1432 is one of the largest in France and Caen, thanks to its many attractions and things on offer, it makes an excellent place to visit outside of the main tourist season and in any case as a base from which to explore the rest of Normandy.
