Cherbourg

Cherbourg with its 90,000 inhabitants serves as a port for ferries travelling to Ireland and England, and cruise ships. With 11,000 yacht visits it is also one of the most visited French yachting harbours. It is worth seeing the Bassin du Commerce the oldest part of the port, the Cite de la Mer, Fort du Roule and Parc Emmanuel Liais.
 
Places nearby to visit include Barfleur the middle age harbour, the peninsula La Hague, Ile de Tathiou, the Pac Natuerl Regional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin (nature reserve) and Portbail.
 
If you are doing a D-Day visit from the UK, the stop at St.Mere Eglise first, on your way down to Pont de Hoc and the D-Day beaches.
